Druids Temple, Ilton

You could be forgiven for thinking these linked stone circles hidden in the middle of a conifer wood are an ancient sacred site. A palisade enclosing spaces crowded with standing stones, a cell, and altar, it was commissioned by William Danby of Swinton Hall in 1820, apparently as a make-work scheme for locals in hard times.

Directions: A mile N of Ilton turn L, and continue past HG4 4JZ entrance to road end. There is a car park and short footpath. NB 11⁄2 miles to the SW is one of the enormous sighting towers of Colsterdale, used by surveyors planning the two reservoirs below Ilton Moor.
